Description: The cranberry bean gets the name from the mottled cranberry-red and ivory pinto markings and is related to the Tongues of Fire Bean. Cranberry Beans are known for their creamy texture with a flavor similar to chestnuts. Cranberry beans are rounded with red specks, which disappear on cooking. These beans are a favorite in northern Italy and Spain. You can find them fresh in their pods in Autumn. They also freeze well. USDA Zones: 3b - 11 Maturity: 10 to 12 weeks Sun: Full sun to partial shade, requires sun for growth, but may be in shared for 25% of the day. Water: Average water, support during times of drought or high heat. Soil: Rich soil which has plenty of organic material in it. They have a deep root system, so digging should be to a spade and a half's depth, incorporating compost or other organic material during the process. If possible, prepare the soil a month or so in advance of sowing the seeds - late March is a good time. Growing: Direct Sowing: These beans are very frost-tender at the sowing and seedling stage and if unprotected, will in almost all cases damaged by any degree of frost.
