Organic Crimson (Red) Lentils Description: Lentils are primarily grown for sprouts and use in soups and baked products. Growing Lentils is very simple, no special care needed. Grow as you would any other bean. You can support them with a trellis or latticework to ensure a profound harvest. Sprouting Description: Growing Lentils for sprouts is a very popular and economic form of nutrition. Lentils are a rich source of dietary fiber. Lentils are a powerhouse of nutrition. They are a good source of potassium, calcium, zinc, niacin and vitamin K, but are particularly rich in dietary fiber, lean protein, folate and iron. Soil pH: 6.0 to 7.2 (Slightly acidic to just above neutral). Container Growing: Yes, very successful. Sowing: Prepare the planting bed by using a garden fork to loosen the soil. Mix in a 1-inch layer of mature compost. Plant seeds 1 inch deep. Wide double rows (two parallel rows of beans planted 12 to 14 inches apart) are the most space-efficient way to grow Lentils; you may incorporate an arbor/arch/latticework if you desire. Transplanting: Lentils may be transplanted if started indoors, however, in general, almost all types of beans do not respond well to transplanting after establishment. Fertilizer: Lentils don't need much nitrogen since they are able to take nitrogen from the air and fix it on their roots; called nitrogen fixation. Add lime if the soil is acidic. Rich soil or soil to which compost has been added will be fine until beans begin to flower.
