Organic Cranberry Beans Description: An old-time New England heirloom dating back to the 1700's and is perhaps the most attractive of all dried beans. Unduplicated quality, reliability, and hardiness have made it our most popular bush shelling bean since our beginnings in the seventies. Useful as either a fresh shell bean (60 days) or dry bean (85 days). Brightly colored, red-mottled 6 inch long pods are borne on vigorous, upright bush-type plants. Their sweet, succulent flavor is wonderful in soups, for baking and in a variety of other delicious ways. Light: Full Height: Up to 34 inch Width: Varied Spacing: 6 inch to 8 inch Needs Pollinator: No Planting Season: Spring to Summer Days to Maturity: 60 Needs Isolation: No Start Indoors: Not needed, may be started indoors early in the season, before the last frost. Start Direct: Yes Soil pH: 6.0 to 7.2 (Slightly acidic to just above neutral). Container Growing: Yes, very successful. Sowing: Prepare the planting bed by using a garden fork to loosen the soil. Mix in a 1-inch layer of mature compost. Plant seeds 1 inch deep. Wide double rows (two parallel rows of beans planted 12 to 14 inches apart) are the most space-efficient way to grow beans; you may incorporate an arbor/arch/latticework if you desire. Average Count per Ounce: 56 to 64 beans per ounce. [All counts are average, we will always include additional for undersized beans.]
