Organic Blue Cattail Typha Glauca Lowman Cattail, Glaucus Cattail Description: Organically grown Blue Cattails for use in Herbology, Homeopathy, and Herbal Medicines. Plant Description: Erect stem ends in club-like, greenish to brownish flower spike densely covered with minute flowers, upper ones (male) separated by naked stem from lower ones (female). Leaves tall, flat, stiff, sheathing. Height: 13' (3.9 m). Flower: April-October. Habitat: Shallow water of ponds, lakes, marshes, moist meadows, springs, seeps, ditches, streamsides, canyon bottoms. Soil pH: 6 to 8 Soil Type: Sand, clay, no drainage, and seasonal flooding Range: Much of the southern half of the western United States east to Arkansas; mainly coastal in the rest of the East but reported inland and as far north as northern Illinois. Propagation: Grow in a rich soil in boggy pond margins or shallow water to 15 cm deep. Succeeds in sun or part shade. Plants can be very invasive, spreading freely at the roots when in a suitable site. Provides excellent cover for wildlife. Edible Uses Flowers; Leaves; Oil; Pollen; Root; Seed; Stem. Roots - raw or cooked. Rich in starch, it can be boiled and eaten like potatoes or macerated and then boiled to yield a sweet syrup. The root can also be dried, ground into a powder and then used as a thickener in soups etc or added to cereal flours. Rich in protein, this flour is used to make biscuits, bread, cakes etc. The root contains a lot of fiber.
