Beaked Yucca, Big Bend Yucca, Old Man Yucca Description: A tall, stout stem rises from a rosette of rigid, sword-like leaves and bears a loose cluster of white, nodding, bell-shaped flowers. Flowers: 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) wide; petals 3; sepals 3, petal-like; stamens 6. Leaves: To 30" (75 cm) long and 2 1/2" (6.3 cm) wide; spoon-shaped, tapering to a blunt point, somewhat cactus-like in appearance, some loose threads along margins. Fruit: Round to Oblong capsule, often constricted near middle. Height: 2-14' (60-300 cm). Flower: June-September. Habitat: Sandy beaches, dunes, old fields; tolerates salt-spray very well Propagation: The most successful method of propagation is by seed; other methods are: root cuttings and offshoots. When you dig up a yucca to transplant, about a year later you often find the site ringed with baby yuccas growing from pieces of root left behind! Range: This is an excellent type of desert yucca from the Southern US and Mexico that is also adaptable to most of the rest of the US as well. Introduced in Ontario; New York and Connecticut south to Florida, west to Texas, and north to Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Tolerates cold down to -20.
